Maldives has always been a dream place for me and I am glad I have the opportunity to visit this beautiful country in April 2014. While I was doing my research on which resort should I go to, I chanced upon the opportunity of this paid volunteer program, offered by Volunteer Maldives (VM). Instead of going to a resort which is so commercialized, this program allows me to get a feel of local Maldivian life and have a better understanding of their culture.
I sent an e-mail to Volunteer Maldives to enquire about the program I am interested in; being a Preschool Worker. I never expected it to be such a breeze to liaise with Yvonne from Volunteer Maldives. All responses are prompt and I am well taken care of from the day I land in Maldives till the day I am home in Singapore. Though I am travelling alone, I have never felt I will be stranded at any point of time as co-ordination between VM and local representatives from Komandoo are seamless.

I am assigned to spend one month working with local teachers in Komandoo Pre-school. Little kids are excited and curious with this stranger who has joined their class. I sing nursery rhymes, tell stories and play with them. They have enjoyed the class as much as I do.
I stayed with a local host family which I have a private room en-suite. Room is clean and neat with a ceiling fan. My host is a very good cook who prepared 4 to 5 meals a day of simple yet delicious Maldivian dishes. Near to my home, there is a beautiful beach which is just 2 minutes away by foot.
My daily activities included morning and evening walk around the island to watch sunrise and sunset, sitting at the netted chair and chat with neighbours, swimming, picking up sea shells, picnics at uninhabited island on some weekends and star gazing to watch out for shooting stars.

My experience in Maldives is not something which I have imagined but I have enjoyed every moment it. Thanks to VM, councilors and friends whom I have befriended on this trip. The photos and videos will leave good memories which I will cherished dearly and hope that I will have another chance to visit my friends in Komandoo again.
