The time I spent in the Maldives is an experience I will never forget!! I have so many wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. I worked on the island Dharavandhoo for four weeks assisting in the classroom with English teaching as well as teaching swimming to the local children. As I was not expecting to be teaching a great deal of English, I was extremely nervous to begin with as I didn’t have any experience in this area however it turned out to be such a wonderful and rewarding experience and just seeing the small improvements I was able to make to the students vocabulary was so rewarding.
The people I meant during my time on the Island were amazing they all welcomed us into their community and culture and their friendliness and generosity made myself and Annabelle feel at home. The children were so cute and just melted my heart each day we would leave the school with another card or gift made by one of the students they were extremely generous and had so much to give!
Some of the things which I enjoyed the most on the Island was the day out which we hhad with the staff from the school visiting an uninhabited island which was absolutely beautiful and just spending time with the staff to learn more about their culture was so much fun. We also had the opportunity to visit another local island to help the school with their staff development day which was extremely rewarding and I feel that we benefited them by giving them some new ideas which they could implement into their curriculum. I also enjoyed going exploring on the Island snorkeling in all the beautiful reefs was definitely one of my favorite ways of spending the afternoon.
A special mention needs to go to the VM team from the very first email up until we said our goodbyes at the Male airport the team were only ever an email, phone call or text message away and were continually working tirelessly (and for Michelle quite often in her own time) to make our experience one which we would never forget from sending small treats from Male to the Island to organizing weekend trips to local resorts to see the true beauty and everything which the country has to offer. The team should definitely be commended on all the effort which they put into this program!
It has been almost four months now since our volunteer experience came to an end and I am already wanting to go back and visit, I meant so many lovely people that I will never forget and would love to get back one day to see how them all grown up.
Thanks again to Volunteer Maldives for the experience of a lifetime!!!!!!!
