Maldives Programs

Teaching

Teaching in the Maldives is an incredibly rewarding experience, and we have islands up and down the country desperately needing qualified teachers and teacher trainers.

English is the second language of the Maldives, and is taught in all schools, however, and commercial hubs however, much help is needed in the teaching of the language.

Fully qualified or with TEFL or ESOL qualifications are in high demand for short term and long term projects, the islands really need your help to make a positive impact on the early learning years of the children. Most schools require teachers to assist with the junior age groups 6-10 years to ensure a good foundation level of the language is maintained.

Dependent on your experience you may be given classes of your own, assist the existing teachers, or conduct teacher training courses.

The Maldivian academic year runs from January to November – placements are available throughout the year, particularly at the beginning of the year!

Sports

Sports are enjoyed by people the world over, and Maldivians are no exception! It's still one of the best ways to unite people, creating strong community spirit and forging lifelong friendships.

Our sports programs have been very successful, with more to be implemented next year, working with new islands and NGO's.

Volunteer Maldives works alongside local coaches who are either part of a youth and sports group, or work within schools.

Whether teaching aerobics, badminton, volleyball, football, dance and a myriad of opportunities await volunteers with lots of energy and enthusiasm to inspire the youth  and to get the more mature islanders moving also!

Volunteers are needed to develop better sports programs and to allow children to discover where their talents lie. There are also opportunities to combine a sports program with another project such as pre-school or teaching... you can utilize your sports talents and get involved with after school clubs to really enhance your volunteer experience!

You will be an assistant on these projects and help plan, prepare and deliver sports, games and activities within the community, as well as encouraging and motivating those who attend. You can act as a referee or help coach the people in their chosen activity. You can also help organize tournaments and competitions and help draw up training schedules if you have lots of energy!

Teaching Assitant

Preschool Assistants and Mainstream school Teaching assistants

For non-qualified, enthusiastic volunteers who would love to help out in the classroom – we have positions available both in the mainstream schools, working beside the qualified teachers. Alternatively, all islands also have pre-schools for kids aged 2 – 6 years – where volunteer assistance is also very much required!

We request all volunteers for these positions be fluent in spoken and written English.
The focus in the pre-school and nursery classes will be very much centred around fun, educational activities, as well as learning new crafts to enhance motor skills, art, and music.
For Teaching Assistant positions in the mainstream school – this will be invaluable experience for those who perhaps are considering teaching as a career. You will be working beside qualified teachers with experience, and injecting your own personality and creative ideas into the classroom.

A TEFL qualification will also assist you greatly in these roles – whilst not a necessity, it will give you many ideas for creative and innovative learning techniques, and you’ll feel more comfortable in the classroom!
