Saturday June 11th Football Tournament
As part of the Volunteer Maldives ‘Gives Back’ campaign, we at Volunteer Maldives were delighted to see the end product after weeks of preparation of the football tournament for the youth of Velidhoo Island in Noonu Atoll.

Working in conjunction with the islands two wonderful NGO’s – Velidhoo Youth Development Society (VYDS) and Club Still Red, the tournament was underway by 8am.

The previous week saw Volunteer Ryan, a qualified football coach from Australia, prepare the youngsters, and teach them some handy techniques to make them competitive! Also newly arrived is Volunteer Marc to assist with the football, and will also be helping out teaching English in the school.

After handing out the 120 football shirts and 50 training bibs (donated by Volunteer Maldives), to the 60+ island youth participating in the event, the tournament kicked off with the first round of juniors.

Four lots of matches surprisingly, saw no goals at all being scored, so the best playing teams made it to the final, with a result of 1-0. Despite the lack of goals, the lads had great fun, and the many spectators on the side lines had a great time watching, and the winning team was absolutely thrilled to take a victory round of the island in a truck screaming and cheering at the top of their lungs!

A similar scenario played out the following day, where it was the turn of the Seniors to take to the field, again with the final match going to a 1-0 win.

‘Man of the Match’ and ‘Top Goal Scorer’ trophies were awarded at the end of the tournament, as well as medals and certificates for every participating member, again donated by Volunteer Maldives.
