1 Week Program

Staying with a family or small island guest house, participants can expect a week of thrills and excitement in Mother Nature's playground, doing as the locals do!

Day 01
Welcome to the Maldives! Arrival to Male’ International airport. The Group will be met on arrival by our representative and transferred to a hotel in the tiny Capital Island of Male’ for the first night.

Day 02
Boat transfer to the island of Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll. The group will be greeted by the local community leaders and NGO’s.

After island style refreshments of coconut juice you’ll have time to settle into your accommodation, which will be homestays to get you acquainted with community members quickly!
The afternoon will be spent at leisure familiarizing yourselves with the island, making friends and chatting over a coffee in the island café, and maybe experiencing your first Maldives Sunset on this tiny island in the Indian Ocean!

Dinner this evening will be a lively affair in the local island café’.

Day 03
This morning, the group will proceed with a guided tour of the island. This includes, a visit to the local Council Office, Schools, Hospital, Police and Magistrate Court, Mosques, Café’s, NGO Offices, Power House, Desalinated Water Plant, Cable TV Network Station, where you will be briefed about the institute, the islands infrastructure and how it’s governed.

After lunch, let’s go swimming! A swimming trip will be arranged to a neighboring sand bank. Beach games, swimming, snorkelling are available.

Day 04
Learning to speak in the local Maldivian language - ‘Dhivehi’!

This morning, the pre-school teachers ( AKA – ‘Aunties’) will conduct this great and useful fun class, so that you can get a taste of the local language and impress the community and your new island friends, as well as easier communication of course!

In the late afternoon, a trip to an uninhabited island will be arranged for a ‘Half Night’ Barbeque, with local music. This is a lovely atmospheric experience – let’s hope the stars are out to add to the ambience!

Day 05
This morning we’ll head out to ‘Kuda Faru’… Otherwise known as 7 Tree island! On this sand spit you can swim and snorkel with an amazing vista of the Indian Ocean all around you.. so surreal!
‘Taste of the Maldives’ – Cooking lessons!

With various treats on the menu – most home-made by the women in the families, participants will enjoy the authentic taste of the Maldives! Program participants can help out on this special afternoon and enjoy Maldivian Cookery Lessons – learn to cook Maldivian style with the Komandoo ‘Aunties’ to guide you! If you can, exchange your own traditional ideas and show the people some easy recipes to the mix!

Day 06
Friday mornings are slow and leisurely in the Maldives! As its holy day, the gentlemen of the island will normally sleep late, waking before afternoon prayer, after which they come home and enjoy a lovingly prepared Friday Lunch!

During the evening a local style Night Fishing trip will have everyone holding an empty bottle with simple fishing wire wrapped around it with a piece of bait on the end of a hook! Marvel at the way the locals do it… and try to copy! Always a fun evening to see who (if anyone!) manages to catch the most fish!!

Day 07
Full Day Island Adventure - Today we’ll take a visit to a close by uninhabited islands call ‘Three Islands ‘ – ‘Dhigurah’, ‘Medurah’ and ‘Maidurah’ - for snorkeling, swimming, picnic lunch and generally enjoying this breathtaking environment and investigating the sea life! If there is time, we’ll also go for a Dolphin watch cruise… first one to spot a dolphin will experience a magic and happy experience!

Day 08
Morning at leisure on your last full day on Komandoo.

The special ‘farewell’ dinner on the beach, with traditional Maldives clothing and with music and cultural dancing. Participants can also perform their homeland cultural songs. Exchange gifts and awards and certificates for the group.

Day 09
After breakfast, we’ll bid a fond farewell to our new found island friends, and take a couple of hours before the departure boat to tour round the neighboring island of Alifushi. On this island, students will visit the industrial Maldivian boat building site, to enhance their knowledge on various types of boats and how they are built. Students will also visit to The Vocational Training Center (V.T.C) to see how their programs are run and what impact it has on local community.

The scheduled boat from Alifushi goes back to Male’ arriving back around 6pm, program participants can fly out the same night – please allow flights departing after 9pm to be on the safe side! Otherwise, participants can pre-book accommodation in the capital for a night or two at their own expense, and at leisure, before departing the Maldives.

please note this is a tentative schedule and will be subject to change and alteration depending on the days you arrive, and weather conditions etc

2 Week Program

The two week program, whilst fun filled with all the same activities as the 1 week itinerary, with a little more time, participants will also be able to help out in the Pre-school with fun, educational games. Additional activities will be helping out with current community projects, involvement with sports programs, a visit to a nearby commercial island, and also a trip to neighboring island Alifushi, where the community are renowned for being skilled boat builders, and where there is a vocational college for youngsters to acquire much needed specialize skills.

    2014 BUiLDERS descend on Maroshi ( All in good taste!)

    Friday saw the arrival of this year's BUiLD group from UTS.. a big warm welcome was extended to Briana, Jenna, Khaulah, Nicki, Ryu and Frances as soon as they landed in Male', and a sweet welcome from the island children when the volunteers finally reached the island of Maroshi in the Shaviyani atoll, after a couple of days traveling from Australia.

    The group will be kept very busy this year, and have been working on several presentations on excellent topics, and will this year again be involved with the Debating team offering support and encouragement to the school participants!
    It will all be a great mix of work and play as usual ... full report to follow!
